The Office of the General Minister and President is pleased to announce that Angelique Jordan Byrd has been appointed as the new Director of Communications, effective January 1, 2024. She has a wealth of marketing experience spanning 29 years and is adept at planning and executing omnichannel campaigns with strong analytical, strategy, project management, and leadership skills. She reflects, “working for a major advertising agency, telecommunication company, and a leading utility corporation was rewarding, but nothing compares to using my gifts in ministry.”

She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Advertising from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and a Master of Science Degree in Marketing Communications from Roosevelt University.

Angelique previously served as the Regional Director of the Communications Ministry in The Christian Church (DOC) in Illinois and Wisconsin (and Michigan). She is a Disciple from Illinois. She authored the book, “The Phygital Church: Using Social Ministry to Make Disciples,” to assist congregations with being intentional about ministry in the digital space.

Children and youth are not adults. There is a critical fine line between making our kids feel safe and still helping our children be aware. For children, the brain is not fully developed and thus the information and images being processed can have a damaging effect. Making sure to take time for a young person to process in a healthy way is important.

As we continue to deal with tough situations, here are some reminders from Ministry Across Generations, a ministry of Disciples Home Missions, as your young people process.

If you can, turn off the media. If you can’t with older youth, then watch with them if possible. Process together, but with an awareness that adults and youth are not the same.

Remind them that they are safe. Even though no one can be 100% safe, and you do not need to lie to them, the neurons in our brains need to process a sense of safety to be able to respond in a healthier way.

Respond to a young person based on their age and questions. If a child asks, “Will I get killed at school tomorrow?” don’t respond with your feelings of fear and anger. Remind them of the safety guidelines at schools, the locked doors, the teachers, and the knowledge that people do all they can to protect them. If older, then talk through ways to make safe choices.

Acknowledge their feelings and yours.  It is okay to be scared. It is okay to be sad and angry. At the same time, share with your children about the helpers. Share some hopeful moments that may be hard to see. Spend some quality time with each other.

WASHINGTON, DC – Rev. Lori Tapia, National Pastor for Hispanic Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and 17 other Christian leaders, as a part of the Circle of Protection, have sent a letter to President Biden and every member of Congress calling for justice for poor and marginalized people in the package released today by the Biden administration. Although Congress passed a massive COVID relief bill earlier this month, more must be done to support recovery from the pandemic in a way that makes our country better than it was before.

Rev. Tapia states, “It is in our collective call to reconcile the world to God that our eyes and hearts are opened to see the inequities that are experienced by far too many, especially in communities of color, and to come together in action to create a more equitable world for all.”

The letter says: “We need to shift toward an economy that allows all people to thrive and protects the environment that sustains us. This will require concrete steps to address the legacy of racial injustice in the U.S. and commitment to rectify the structural inequalities experienced by so many, especially communities of color.” It outlines areas of public investment that would provide livable-wage jobs for workers and keep people out of poverty. It also notes that hunger, poverty, and conflict around the world have surged during the pandemic and recommends funding for international aid.

The Circle of Protection supports paying for some of these public investments with increased taxes on corporations and high-income Americans. “Our shared conviction on this controversial point is grounded in Jesus’ teaching,” the leaders wrote. “The Hebrew prophets were clear that nations sometimes need to make big changes, and we think now is such a time.”

The Circle of Protection is a broad and unprecedented coalition of church and ministry leaders from the main families of U.S. Christianity — Catholic, evangelical Protestant, ecumenical Protestant, the Historic African American churches, and Latino churches — working to address issues of poverty and hunger through advocacy work. Together, the church bodies in the Circle of Protection have close to 100 million members. This letter is the first time since the Circle began that these leaders have outlined a vision for long-term change.

When the congregation of South Hills Christian Church in Fort Worth, TX, heard about the cancellation of the 2021 General Assembly due to the pandemic, they were disappointed. When they heard about the financial implications of cancelling, they knew they could help.

“This is a congregation that has been deeply connected to the denomination,” said South Hills senior minister Rev. Dottie Cook. “We have church members who have been attending General Assembly for years. We would have dedicated funding to send people to Louisville in 2021. Since we can’t, this seemed like a way we could do something.”

Last fall, the congregation’s outreach team met and agreed to send a contribution from their outreach ministries to help offset the costs of cancellation fees. “It wasn’t a hard decision,” Rev. Cook said. “This is a generous congregation who values the General Assembly and understands the upfront costs of putting on such an event.”

Giving is a regular practice of the South Hills congregation. The church supports a number of local missions, as well as being active supporters of the Southwest region, Disciples Mission Fund, and other mission opportunities of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). “Our giving and our involvement in the community and the broader church go hand in hand,” explained Rev. Cook. “We live within our means, have a generous community and believe in sharing resources as a way of embodying our faith.”

Cancelling the 2021 General Assembly meant cancelling contracts with hotels and convention centers, which carried heavy cancellation fees and penalties, a liability carried by the Office of the General Minister and President on behalf of the whole church. Rescheduling the 2023 General Assembly to Louisville, as announced last week, will mitigate some of the losses, though cancelling contracts in Memphis – where the 2023 Assembly was originally to be held – still carries significant financial implications.

Contributions like the one from South Hills help. But the real gift is the expression of connectedness. Even when we can’t gather, we can still be together.

If you or your congregation would like to support the General Assembly with a gift, please click here or contact treasury@disciples.org.

Elementary-age youth are curious and ready to learn. Taking advantage of what they are hearing in the culture about social justice and inequities, the time is ripe for introducing concepts about poverty.

Rev. Kate Epperly, staff in Disciples Home Missions’ Ministries Across Generations  who specializes in justice and advocacy for families and children, gathered a faith formation team in response to the Poor People’s Campaign June 20 event. Her grandsons were deeply interested in the broadcast.

“Jack (aged 10) not only watched the whole event, but also had a lot of questions. He immediately made a tagboard sign saying, ‘Black Lives Matter’ and posted it on the front door, but he wanted more,” she said.

Epperly got to work gathering materials and her colleague, Rev. Olivia Updegrove, collaborated. They consulted colleagues of color within the Disciples and the United Church of Christ to vet their work.

Based on an intergenerational model of learning, the web-based curriculum highlights the Poor People’s Campaign five “jubilee justice” principles around communities, inclusion, voice, lifting all, and the concept that there is enough for all.

The Poor People’s Campaign leadership has agreed to present and promote the new website produced by Ministries Across Generations.

“I have been so excited to share this journey with my grandsons Jack and James (aged 8 ) over the summer. I hope others can connect to this faith-based intergenerational, reflection-action education tool.”

2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:2-4 ESV

The author of Matthew makes a good point here when speaking about how we treat children. We were all children once before, and we minimize them so much. In the ministries of Disciples Justice for Children, as well as Disciples Palestine-Israel Network, they make an emphasis on justice for families and children all over the world as well as awareness.

Rev. Kate Epperly and friend

Disciples Justice for Children is a ministry focused on advocacy and justice around family and children. Rev. Kate Epperly, who teams with other ministries, focuses on many issues affecting families and their safety and well-being, such as gun control, domestic violence, and children being separated from their families at the border. Because there are so many issues that families face, particularly now with COVID-19, it is more pertinent more than ever to think about how families are being affected by the pandemic and by the everyday issues this broken world creates. Rev. Epperly has a passion for these and more issues surrounding families and children.

While the Disciples Palestine-Israel Network (DPIN) does not focus specifically on children, they are still at the forefront of advocating for children overseas. DPIN seeks to bring awareness to Disciples about the conflict between Palestine and Israel. Revs. Marla Schrader and Jeff Wright co-coordinate DPIN. The primary goal is to influence policy makers to end Israel’s occupation. DPIN also seeks to move Disciples from our complacency to advocate for a just peace agreement to end the conflict. Because Israeli authorities detain and prosecute around 700 children each year, DPIN seeks to stop US dollars from supporting the these incarcerations illegal under international law.

What can you do to aid each ministry?

  • Disciples Justice for Children
    • Contact and network with Rev. Epperly about specific projects or passions you have about families and/or children
    • Do the Equity Challenge! Take note of who’s in your community (or church, TV, locality) and who’s not and ask why?
    • A resource for families as a partership with The Poor People’s Campaign will be finalized by September 1st.
    • Send in Christmas Cards for children at the detention centers at the border: Contact Rev. Epperly for more information.
  • Disciples Palestine-Israel Network
    • Begin to see how interconnected are all the rising cries for justice–Black Lives Matter, Indigenous Peoples Movement, LGBTQ+, Poor Peoples Campaign, and other global movements such as the Palestinians plea for an end to Israel’s occupation
    • Read a book that counters the triumphal religious narrative we hold of ourselves as Americans, such as An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States

You may not be able to travel much right now, but your imagination is free to roam anywhere it wants to go.

Chalice Press’ newest release, America’s Sacred Sites: 50 Faithful Reflections on Our National Monuments and Historic Sites, arrives just as we’re used to emerging from our winter cocoons and exploring the country – in an time when pandemic keeps us at home. The new book pairs a National Park Service site in each state with a religious or spiritual theme, scripture, and reflection questions. It’s a follow-up to America’s Holy Ground: 61 Faithful Reflections on Our National Parks, co-written by Chalice Press publisher Brad Lyons and Minister for Faith and Giving Bruce Barkhauer.

“Both books have roots in our faith tradition,” Lyons says. “America’s Holy Ground was environmental in its perspective, while America’s Sacred Sites is focused more on human creativity and social justice.

“But both books have a strong connection to stewardship,” Barkhauer added, “care for the earth. Stewardship is a whole-life practice, and we are to be good stewards of our history and story. We are to be truth tellers. Sometimes that’s uncomfortable and sometimes that’s delightful.”

The National Park Service includes more than 400 locations. Together the two books have covered about one-quarter of the system, which is why the second book has been in the works since the inception of the first book.

“We included a section in the first book explaining why sites like Mount Rushmore, Golden Gate National Recreation Area and other immensely popular, well-known sites weren’t included in the first book,” Lyons said. “But when it came time to pick one site from each state, that was a challenge. Some states have only a few sites, while others have dozens. And we haven’t even started on the District of Columbia, which would probably be a book all by itself, or the other American territories. I’d love to add Canada!”

Taking center stage are historical sites – Maryland’s Harriett Tubman Underground Railroad National Historic Park (Risk), Alabama’s Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail  (Progress), and the Oklahoma City National Monument (Innocence) – and nature-focused sites like Wyoming’s Devils Tower (Sacred), the fourteen-state Appalachian Trail (Preparation), and the most-visited NPS unit, California’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area (fun).

Both authors are learning something new with every entry. “I had no idea when I started researching that the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty are linked to the abolitionist movement,” Barkhauer says. “The bell gained fame as part of the anti-slavery movement, and a hard-to-see element of the Statue includes broken shackles around her ankles. Those are the kinds of discoveries that make writing this so much fun.”

Both books can be ordered from ChalicePress.com or wherever you order books. Sign up to receive additional entries by email on AmericasHolyGround.com and on Facebook.

Rice Patch Christian Church in Islandton, SC is being blessed with spiritual uplifting. The church has begun a series of “drive-in” services on the front parking lot situated on Highway 63 between Walterboro, SC and Hampton, SC. The Lord has blessed us with outstanding attendance from a group of people who treasure their worship and fellowship each week at Rice Patch. We had a wonderful drive-in service at Rice Patch at 10:00 AM on Easter Sunday. We had more than 20 cars parked in the parking lot and several people across the two streets bordering the building in vehicles and one family at their home.

On a previous Sunday, we even had cars stop during the service from Highway 63 and park with us for the duration of the service. The audio visual team at Rice Patch constructed a network of four powerful speakers and a microphone on the front steps of the building. The Lord was with us and blessing us!

At the end of the Easter service, I asked aloud for any who would request baptism to stand. Three youngsters, across the highway with their families, stood up and raised their hands asking for baptism. I had the help of the microphone and speakers on the front steps of the church so I took their confessions and they shouted a resounding “Yes” individually to the question of their belief that Jesus Christ is their personal Savior. Their families, including at least one grandparent, was present in the yard. The grandfather of these spiritually aware youngsters was baptized just a few weeks earlier.

After this happened, I was wondering how we could have a baptismal service with the group and not violate the personal separation rules. The indoor baptistry would not allow within the rules for an audience of church members, friends, and family of those requesting baptism. Then a church officer came up to me and said that we could borrow a tank and place it on the front parking lot. Several church men brought the tank and placed it on the parking lot the next Sunday at 10:00 AM full of crystal clear water.

At the end of the worship service, each of these fine youngsters were baptized by their baptized believer fathers and grandfather in the tank surrounded by a group of people in their vehicles observing. Each young person restated their confession of Jesus as their Savior individually and I announced to the group that each “was baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit for the remission of their sins”.

Coming up from the water each of the new Christians received a cacophony of enthusiastic vehicle horns in support of their obedience. All was done obeying the instructions of our governor about physical separation. Only the family were touching the person being baptized, so there is no chance of any outside communication of the virus. I am thankful for the quick thinking of this church officer, Ralph Polk, because I would have not known what to do to get a request for baptism and not be able to provide the response. The Lord is definitely looking over us and taking care of us.

Many of the friends of the youngsters came and parked in the parking lot with Rice Patch Christian Church attendees so they could view this exciting baptismal service. Our church historian, Tammy Polk, posted movies of each baptism on the Rice Patch Christian Church Facebook page for all to see.

I pray that other churches will confront similar issues and have equally rewarding means of providing the Lord’s care and keeping. Our members are determined that when the virus is brought under control, we will have at least one service per year outside as a drive-in service to commemorate the way the Lord has blessed us during this tragedy in the life of many people.

“Hello Disciples, this is your General Minister and President Terri Hord Owens.

Psalm 46 tells us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change and the mountains even crumble into the sea. there is a lot going on in our world today that causes us fear – rumors of wars, economic instability, clashes within our own society, anxiety over election results, and of course the COVID19 coronavirus.

Here at Disciples Center we are working across our general ministries to ensure that essential tasks are being carried out – but also that our staff are safe, and we’re encouraging as many people to work at home as can. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any changes to our schedule here at Disciples Center.

After consultation with the moderators of the General Assembly, I have decided to suspend my own travel and public appearances for the time being. One of the most important things that we can all do during this time is to follow the guidance and counsel of state and local authorities, as well as the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Please continue to visit our website, disciples.org, where we have compiled a list of resources and other valuable information – everything from the most recent guidance from the CDC and the World Health Organization, to helpful suggestions and plans shared from other regions and congregations throughout the Church. I know you will find this resource helpful.

During these difficult and uncertain times, it’s so important that we stay connected as Church. I encourage you to follow us regularly on our social media outlets: FacebookTwitter, and Instagram. In addition, please go to our website, disciples.org, and sign up for our weekly e-newsletter Disciples News Service. We’ll be communicating with you on a very regular basis through our social media and sending out weekly updates via email. You want to be sure to get the latest news and information from across the Church.

Week of Compassion, the ministry that responds to natural disasters across our Church, will be, in fact, helping us to manage the Church’s response to outbreaks and cases of coronavirus. if you have a case in your congregation or in your region, please contact Week of Compassion, just as you would during any difficult situation, and they are prepared to help coordinate resources to ensure that whatever we can do for churches, families, and congregations, we are in a position to do. Week of Compassion will still be there.

Church, it’s hard to stay faithful during times of difficulty and uncertainty, in times when we’re simply fearful. But our scripture for the General Assembly in 2021, Romans 8:38-39, reminds us of Paul’s own confidence in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul says, ‘I am convinced’ that neither death, nor life, nor height, nor depth, nor powers, nor principalities, nor anything in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.

During these times, I hope that you will continue to practice your own spiritual disciplines of prayer and Bible study, to remind yourself that God is still with us. We pray for you daily and we’ll continue to pray for you. I am convinced that God will take care of us, that God will lead us through these difficult moments.

Be sure to follow the good advice that’s being given to you by health officials, take care of yourselves, be conservative with your own exposure to public events, and know that we are praying for you, that God loves you.

Disciples, I am convinced that nothing in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Jesus. Let’s stay connected, and together we’ll get through this. God bless you. We’ll be praying for you.”

You’ve seen the headlines and wagged your head in disbelief. Another congregation has been roiled by abuse of children or other employee misconduct. The media is at their doorstep. For a moment you think, “What if that was my congregation?”

Prevention and planning are key to lowering your risk of adverse incidents. This is part one of a series intended to give quick pointers for congregations before the crisis occurs.

Abuse situations

One of the first areas to address is the care of children. Background checks should be done not only for employees but also for volunteers who have contact with children. Written policies should be in place for every congregation that outline parameters such as no adult being alone with a child out of the sight of other adults or minimum ages for volunteers.

Our denominational partner, the Insurance Board, has a series of articles and resources on their website that range from training and background check services to procedural templates and information from the Center for Disease Control on how to best prevent child abuse.

The Insurance Board advises congregations to assess their policies (or lack of them) in light of an abuse prevention policy template available for download on the SafeConduct workbench page. If you already have a written policy, there is also an assessment tool available.

Also available from the SafeConduct Workbench are a series of online workshops on keeping camps and churches safe and what kind of activity needs to be reported.

October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month emphasis is just the beginning of learning about the issue that affects people across the spectrum of age, race, and economic status. An estimated 12 million people are hostage in toxic relationships. The dynamics are not logical and the complexities around abuse are not easily understood.

The authors of the 2019 General Assembly Resolution GA-1928: A Call to See and Respond to Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence, Courtney Armento and Rev. Yvonne McCoy, offer this advice:

  1. Become educated about abuse specific dynamics and educate your community, especially youth and young adults
  2. Take action to bring resources, workshops, and prayer events to your community
  3. Stay aware and engaged, become a safer space to those in your midst

The resolution also includes additional actions and links to educational material.

In the final paragraph as adopted by the assembly, all expressions of the Church are called to “increase their spiritual support and efforts to shatter shame, stigma, and silence by preaching and teaching responsibly on the topic of domestic and intimate partner violence; create safe and sanctuary spaces for abuse-specific pastoral care, compassionate conversation, and healing for vulnerable victims and survivors; and work together to dismantle a cultural landscape where domestic violence can thrive and hide.”

“Joining the DHM’s Pro-Reconciling/Anti-Racism Team (PRAR) team has been eye-opening and I’ve learned a lot,” says Brenda Tyler, Disciples Home Missions (DHM) Ministry Associate who now serves as Co-Convener of the PRAR Team.

In 1998, DHM, then Division of Homeland Ministries, was one of seven entities of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) asked to inaugurate a process of ongoing discernment on racism within the life of their ministry and mission. In the process of meeting those goals, DHM’s PRAR team was formed in 2003. The team consists of several staff and board members, and continues to oversee a highly intentional, mandatory, six-year cycle of anti-racism education and audit for DHM’s full staff and board.

This spring, DHM’s PRAR team received a $2,695 grant from Reconciliation Ministry to help underwrite the costs of two 2019 programs: an August planning retreat, which has since been completed, and a training event in November.

In August, DHM’s PRAR team held their annual retreat to plan their upcoming year of training. The Reconciliation grant allowed deployed staff and board members on the team to attend in person and fully participate with the rest of the team. The group planned teambuilding activities for DHM staff, and met with Rev. Dr. Carolyn Helsel, assistant professor of homiletics at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and dedicated anti-racism trainer, to plan their November training.

That next training will be based around Helsel’s book Anxious to Talk about It: Helping White Christians Talk Faithfully about Racism (available from Chalice Press), which all participants are asked to read in advance of the training. The Reconciliation grant also made it possible for DHM to purchase the book for all staff and board members, and to allow Helsel to lead the interactive training in person.

“Because this work is important for the whole Church,” Tyler explains, “This year we’ve invited staff from other general ministries to join us for the anti-racism training in November so we can share different perspectives and learn and grow together.”

In addition to coordinating these biannual trainings, DHM’s ARPR team plans shared readings accompanied by discussion, and educational field trips. In 2019, DHM added a social media adaptation of the 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge program, with prompts to encourage personal reflection and interactive participation in the program.

Beyond these specific activities, the team hopes to serve as a model for other ministries across our Church.

“We are a microcosm of the wider Church at DHM,” Rev. Dr. Kate Epperly, Minister of Justice and Advocacy for Family and Children’s Ministries and Co-Convener of the PRAR Team, explains. “We’ve always been about hands-on mission. PRAR work is not abstract for us at all – it’s personal. Together we are creatively meeting the needs of our time through intersectional ministry and embracing diversity in creative ways.”

To support this and other Reconciliation Ministry Fund programs, you’re invited to give to the Reconciliation Special Offering, received in many congregations on Sept. 29 and Oct. 6.

Ministries Across Generations (previously Family & Children’s Ministries, housed in Disciples Home Missions) calls Disciples families and congregations to participate in the eighth “Light a Candle with Children” prayer vigil this fall, beginning Monday, Sept. 23.

This time of reflection and conversation takes place over the 40 days preceding Children’s Sabbath, which falls on Oct. 20, 2019. This interfaith program is sponsored by the Children’s Defense Fund, and invites faith communities to simultaneously witness for children through prayer, education, and worship.

“Many churches, individuals, and families have used the devotion to light a candle for children. The true prayer we need answered is finding ways to light a candle with children,” suggests Minister for Ministries Across Generations Rev. Dr. Olivia Bryan Updegrove. So, in recent years DHM staff changed the resource’s name from “Light a Candle for Children,” to “Light a Candle with Children,” in order to include youth as active participants.

During the vigil, which will take place Sept. 23-Oct. 20 this year, Ministries Across Generations will post devotions, reflections, and other resources on their website, Facebook page, and Twitter profile. You can also text @weeklyfc to 81010 to receive this information by mobile text message.

The 2019 program’s theme is The Hearts and Voices of Our Young People. Updegrove explains: “Children and teenagers were asked an important question, ‘Why will you be in the Church when you grow up?’ It’s estimated that most young people have decided by age 14 if they will be active in a faith community as an adult. With many young people making the choice to not stay active in their faith into adulthood, it was time to ask those under 14 what connects them to a love of God and God’s people.”

Each devotion for this year’s vigil will include responses, resources, and images from the young people Updegrove asked about their future involvement in our Church.

The Children’s Defense Fund also has resources for their theme, Uniting Hearts and Voices to End Child Poverty.

While Ministries Across Generations encourages families and congregations to participate in the vigil during its designated timeframe, the resources for 2019, and for years past are available online year round, and can be used any time.

To request physical copies of this year’s resources, contact Ministries Across Generations.

Carthage Christian Church has long been active in their community, a working-class neighborhood in Cincinnati, OH. Still, says pastor Rev. Alan Dicken, “we wanted to see if there was more we could be doing to love our neighbor.”

So, earlier this year Carthage conducted a community listening campaign and found that there was a real need for more constructive youth programs. “We knew we didn’t have the resources to provide for these needs on our own,” Dicken explains, “But we took stock of what we could provide: a free location to host events in the neighborhood, and a deep connection to the people who call Carthage home.”

With these important gifts to share, Carthage looked for ways to partner with other organizations to fill this need. “Through outreach, networking, being open to meeting new people in roles outside the church – and let’s be honest, some good God timing,” Dicken remembers, “We were able to connect with the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (CCM), one of the premier music schools in the country.”

Together, the organizations developed an idea for Camp HeARTbeat, an arts program to provide healthy growth and learning through arts projects. In March, they were awarded $35,000 in grant funding from the University of Cincinnati’s health initiative.

Carthage and CCM quickly got to work. CCM recruited instructors and brought instruments and other art supplies, and Carthage CC promoted the program across their community.

Knowing the neighborhood has the highest percentage of Spanish speakers in Cincinnati, Dicken says, “We knew it was important to reach out to our neighbors who come from Central and South America and now call Carthage home.” Congregation members passed out flyers in English and Spanish, went to summer block parties, spoke at civic league meetings, and shared the information with immigrant resource workers.

Earlier this month, their efforts culminated with a weeklong Camp HeARTbeat for 20 children, ages 8-13, from all around Carthage. With grant funding, they were able to offer this program for free, provide free breakfast, lunch, and snacks to all participants, and arrange for teachers in drama, dance, music, and visual art. The week ended with a grand finale performance by the participants for their friends, families, and neighbors.

Watch this short video to see what Camp HeARTbeat looked like.

With the first camp complete, Carthage CC hopes to continue this partnership into the school year with an after-school arts program and recruit more neighborhood business and organizations to join in the effort.

“We are so excited to have our church be a place in our community where all children are welcome to come, laugh, play, eat, and have a chance for artistic expression in their lives,” Dicken celebrates.

“None of this would be possible without partnering with CCM, applying for grant money, and working with local immigrant services. Of course, really none of this would have been possible without the grace and vision granted to us by God.”

When the problems facing the world, the nation, the town feel insurmountable, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but that’s just when it’s most important to lend a hand. Or a book.

Pine Bluff, AR, a town of about 40,000 people, has been “economically destroyed,” explains Rev. Kevin Robbins, minister at First Christian Church. “We have high crime, high unemployment. Once upon a time, Pine Bluff was the jewel of this part of the state. But somewhere in the 1970s-1990s, industry started fleeing.”

Now, the city is working to rebuild the town and attract new industries. The capstone of that initiative, Rev. Robbins says, is building a new library, still under construction.

There, First Christian Church saw an opportunity to form a new partnership and fill an important need in their struggling community.

Congregation volunteers started offering a monthly children’s reading program in the old library’s small theater. For those children and families, this program provided a safe, inviting place to gather and learn.

“I learned in seminary to know my scope,” Rev. Robbins remembers. “I can’t educate every kid in Pine Bluff, but I know I can provide a group of people, to welcome them, warm them, and read a story once a month.”

In practical ways, this program is a success for FCC because there are opportunities for everyone to participate. “For folks who say they have nothing left to give, in terms of age or ability, this program is a new chance,” celebrates Rev. Robbins. “One of our team members is our oldest worship attendee. They have macular degeneration, so they can’t walk well – but they volunteer as a greeter, sitting at the front entrance and welcoming everyone to join us.”

In more philosophical ways, FCC’s literacy work has also been impactful. “Literacy is foundational to education,” Rev. Robbins explains. “If you can’t read, you can’t receive an education. How do we help people move out of a negative life situation if they can’t receive an education because they can’t read?”

The congregation’s new partnership with the library offers both the practical tools needed, and the relational support to sustain the program, “cradling people while they’re learning and making learning fun and valued,” Rev. Robbins suggests.

As their project progresses, FCC also expanded this program to offer a book club around works that share spiritual life lessons. They began this club by selecting books that have been adapted into movies, so they can watch it together and discuss the different interpretations. This program provides “a nonthreatening way to go to church,” Rev. Robbins argues.

As First Christian Church explores new ways to serve their community, they continue to “follow a simple rubric,” Rev. Robbins shares. “Why do we do this? Because Jesus loves us, and we love you.”

“For the Lord your God…executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner therefore; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 10:17-19)

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” (Matthew 19:14)

Dear Church,

Our sacred scriptures are filled with stories of uprooted peoples and prophets in movement, with constant presence and direction from God.  We are inspired by the leading of our Lord who liberated the Israelites, comforted the community as they faced exile and later repatriation, and guided Jesus’ family to safety as they fled persecution under Herod.  We therefore are ready to live out our call to demonstrate radical hospitality and welcome today’s immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers who are likewise searching for protection from persecution.

Our hearts grieve the deaths of children on the U.S.-Mexico border and in detention facilities while in U.S. custody which are at odds with our call to welcome.  We urge the release of immigrant children and adults held captive within our land in detention holding centers reported in recent weeks by the Office of Inspector General to have “issues of dangerous overcrowding” and sub-standard hygiene requiring “corrective action…critical to the immediate health and safety needs of detainees.” We are appalled by the “prolonged detention of children and adults,” despite regulations aimed to ensure children are housed only in sanitary conditions, are released without unnecessary delay, and would be placed in the least restrictive conditions.

We remember how Jesus announced his ministry “to preach good news to the poor… proclaim release to the captives and…set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18).  We reaffirm our previous commitments against family separations and efforts to end child detention, and we again demand these practices that are keeping children detained in dozens of facilities be ended.  Together with the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, we speak out against the housing of immigrant children at Fort Sill Army post where Japanese Americans were interned during World War II, and “cannot stand silent as this history is repeated with innocent children who will, no doubt, incur trauma and life-altering consequences.”

Because we believe that love can transcend every cultural divide, we join with ecumenical and interfaith partners to urge all persons seeking asylum be granted full due process and opportunities to pursue protections as guaranteed by national and international laws.  We confess US foreign policies have contributed to exploitation of Central American countries and created root conditions that encourage persons to migrate.

As people of faith, we are eager to “not neglect to show hospitality to strangers” (Hebrews 13:2) and to strengthen our efforts to become “Immigrant Welcoming Congregations.”  Therefore, we urge our government leaders to positively and urgently address the crisis at the border; such as establishing regional refugee processing centers, strengthening asylum protections in the US and Mexico, modernizing ports of entry, using existing funding to US Customs and Border Protection to hire child welfare professionals, supporting proven and community-based alternatives to detention, and addressing the root causes of migration.

In this critical moment, aware that our “ancestor Jacob was a wandering Aramean who went to live as a foreigner in Egypt…but…became a large and mighty nation” (Deuteronomy 26:5, NLT), we seek to faithfully assume our responsibilities to care for the sojourner.  For we remember Jesus’ words that “as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40).

As a military spouse, Pastor Jennifer M. Moreno has made 12 moves in the 19 years her husband has been active duty in the United States Army.

Since 2012, when she was commissioned as a minister with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she’s established military ministries in each congregation she serves – so far seven congregations in three regions. She currently serves as interim pastor at Palm Lake Christian Church in St. Petersburg, FL.

For Moreno, a military ministry should serve three key functions: keep service members and congregations in touch, support military families in the community, and provide a meaningful role for congregants who currently serve (or have previously served) in the military.

To keep service members and congregations connected, Moreno focuses on creating an online presence for the congregations she serves. When a congregation member is deployed, watching livestreamed or recorded services online can help them “stay engaged, be fed, and stay connected,” Moreno explains.

Developing an online presence also helps congregations reach and support military families in their communities, Moreno suggests. When she talks with military families, she recommends they research faith communities in their new home to find one that best fits their needs. Reading about congregations on their websites or watching clips from worship services can help new families find that fit. “Online tools are important for congregations to get comfortable with because they can be used to test drive your church before a person or family ever decide to visit in person.”

To further support new military families in her congregation, Moreno offers pastoral care for families when service members are deployed. She encourages other congregants to join her in intentionally inviting military family members to church and community activities or offer to bring them a meal.

“It’s very important for us to understand that not only the service member is sacrificing, but families are too,” explains Moreno. “Families are missing out on so much. We have to be mindful of that, willing to understand that, and be extra supportive for spouses and families.”

“Offering this extra support for military families is also a great way to involve interested service members and veterans already in your congregation,” Moreno says. Perhaps a willing veteran member could serve as a “military liaison,” welcoming and sitting by military family visitors.

Any congregation can, and should, take these steps, she argues. “Every single town has recruiting stations, so every single congregation has an opportunity to reach out to military families…We also all have veterans and families of deployed service members in our communities.”

Developing military ministries is a calling for Moreno, who has experienced the value of congregational support. “As a military family, connecting my family and my church family has always been extremely important. My husband and I know wherever we live, we always have a place to call home for church. We’ve lived all over the world, but no matter where we go, we always have a home away from home.”
