from the Board of Higher Education and Leadership Ministry

The Board of Directors of Higher Education and Leadership Ministries (HELM) seeks a President who will work with HELM’s board and higher education constituents to:

  • Enrich the current mission and programs of HELM, while strategically looking to the future of HELM’s ministry.
  • Consult and network with other persons and entities within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) that include leadership development in their core missions, especially for young adults;
  • Develop collaborative relationships that strengthen HELM’s capacity to enact its core mission;
  • Develop and begin to implement a plan for economic equilibrium and a sustainable funding formula to enable HELM’s ministry long-term.

Our 2023 Context

HELM represents the continuation of over a century of organized Disciples commitment to the ministries of higher education as manifested in colleges and universities, campus ministries, and graduate theological education. Identifying, cultivating, equipping and supporting transformative leaders is HELM’s core work.

We live in an age of ongoing disruption of patterns of religious affiliation and participation, a disruption that has been underlined by the Covid-19 pandemic. These new and different ways of understanding and participating with “church” markedly affect congregations, regional and general expressions of church, and institutions of church-related higher education — both undergraduate educationand graduate theological education. HELM, concerned with the development of spiritual leaders (especially Christian, and particularly Disciples of Christ), must continually assess what is needed now and in the times to come.

The President will face a combination of opportunities and challenges in helping HELM enact its mission, relationships, and programs. Here are a few that the Board has identified:

  • God is at work in the world calling forth and equipping leaders to serve the future needs of God’s mission. This is HELM’s central opportunity and challenge. HELM seeks to join God in the work of calling and equipping leaders for a changing world, especially among those persons in Disciples- related institutions of higher education.
  • Many expressions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are either engaged in or talking about the work of leadership development. How might HELM take a more active role in networking and amplifying this work?
  • HELM’s leadership programs, especially the HELM Leadership Fellows Program, are critical components of HELM’s ministry and have important and impressive outcomes. How will these programs be sustained and improved?
  • Funding the mission is a critical issue. Some endowed funds support HELM’s programs. Operating money from Disciples Mission Fund will continue to decrease. What does economic equilibrium look like for HELM?
  •  Relationships with the HELM’s core ministry partners – the fifteen colleges and universities, and the seven graduate theological institutions affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) – need continued development and deepening.

The HELM board is ,overall, an active and committed group. That said, board development and achieving full engagement will be a priority. Over the past three decades, HELM’s staff has been reduced. The President will need to assess the staff—employed and volunteer— HELM needs in order to accomplish its mission. Currently, there is a half-time program coordinator, and two part-time administrative support staff.

We invite interested and qualified persons to join us in this journey!

We hope that you will be thoughtful and intentional in your consideration of this job announcement, and make your application before the February 22, 2023 deadline. Or, if you know someone who would be a great candidate, please share this invitation and our job description. The information about how to apply is located at the end of the job description.

We are committed that HELM will be a ministry that continues to make a difference in the world, and we hope you will join us!

The Board of Trustees of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society (DCHS) is pleased to announce the call of Dr. Joel Brown to serve as its new President.

Search committee chair and DCHS board member, Rev. Rebecca Hale, noted that “This is an important time as the Society builds on the excellent leadership of Rev. Dr. Lowery in expanded digitization, infrastructure improvements, and living ever more fully into the Society’s vision of  ‘celebrating our past and telling its hard truths, we seek a church empowered to make history now and thus to shape a future ever more faithful to God’s dream of unity and justice for all’.”

Through an extensive search process, the Society sought a visionary leader to work alongside the Board of Trustees to lead DCHS into a future that lives into the vision illustrated at the March 2022 Kirkpatrick Lectures with the theme: “Systemic Racism, Antiracism, and Reconciliation in Our Shared History and Tradition.” The ability to make significant gains in digitization, fundraising, and infrastructure improvements were also named as priorities in the search for a new President.

Dr. Brown recently earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago with a dissertation titled: “Preparing the Way: African American Women and Social Christianity in Turn-of-the-Century Chicago.” He holds a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Texas Christian University, Brite Divinity School, where his thesis was titled: “White Evangelicals and the Civil Rights Movement” and a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Abilene Christian University, Graduate School of Theology. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts from Abilene Christian University.

Joel’s recent work includes serving as the Associate for Publications and Programming at the Disciples Divinity House at the University of Chicago, serving as the Managing Editor for the Martin Marty Center for the Public Understanding of Religion, and as the Managing Editor for the Religion & Culture Forum (2016-2018).

Committee and Board of Trustee members noted that Dr. Brown brings excellent scholarship, a breadth of knowledge related to historical archives, deep connections to the Stone-Campbell traditions, and a visionary yet humble spirit that will guide the Society. Joel’s well lived and clearly articulated commitments to equity and justice work also came to the fore during the search process.

Dr. Brown notes, “I am incredibly honored and deeply humbled by the call to serve in this leadership role and to continue the important work that DCHS has been doing of preserving and telling our history, both lifting up those narratives that tell of our movement’s faithfulness and achievements as well as reckoning with those parts of our story where we have fallen short and caused harm. As we find ourselves in a particular moment when “history” is being weaponized to narrow minds and hearts, I look forward to working with our churches, ministries, schools, and partners in other streams of the Stone-Campbell Movement to realize that critical and faithful study of our history can be a source for liberation, justice, and wholeness as we move forward into the future.”

Dr. Brown begins his service in on September 1, 2022.

The Search Team was led by Rev. Rebecca Hale, DCHS Board Member; Archie Jenkins, DCHS Board of Trustees Chair and member of Guyton Christian Church in Georgia; Rev. Dr. Tim Lee, Professor, Brite Divinity School; Joyce Lambert, Elder at Philadelphia Fellowship Christian Church in Pennsylvania; Rev. Janae Pitts-Murdock, Senior Pastor, Light of the World Christian Church, DCHS Board Member; Rev. Dr. José Francisco Morales Torres, Professor, Chicago Theological Seminary; Rev. Sandhya Jha, Consultant, Without Fear Consulting; Dr. James Gorman, Professor, Johnson University, DCHS Board Member.

VISION, MISSION, and VALUES

FORMATION: The University Christian Church Legacy Foundation was formed by the University Christian Church congregation in the spring of 2018 as they prepared to sell the building and join forces with Lake City Christian Church and create a new community, Journey Christian Church.  The congregation desired that the Legacy Foundation would carry on some portion of the historic ministry of the church with particular care to steward University Christian Church’s legacy of ministry on behalf of social justice, mercy, and solidarity with those navigating poverty or injustice. In preparation to receive the funds from the sale of the property the UCC Legacy Foundation Board began to meet in the summer of 2018.  Since that beginning the board has worked to determine an intentional focus of our vision and mission and to clearly articulate our values.

As we worked and discerned our priorities, our calling became clear:

  • serve children, youth and families who are experiencing homelessness;
  • address the crises that can lead to homelessness;
  • and address related crises for which ongoing support could be a gift and grace.

OUR VISION: that all families, children, and youth may thrive and grow.

OUR MISSION: to support children, youth, and families who have experienced or are experiencing trauma and for whom ongoing assistance could help break down barriers to stability.

CORE VALUES: In witness to the wholeness of the human family we envision a Beloved Community where all are included and encouraged, with particular focus on the children, youth and families most vulnerable to systemic poverty, trauma, and barriers to help.

OUR PROCESS: DIRECT SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY

Through grants to non-profits, we seek to support, preserve, and protect the dignity of those who find themselves on the edge of society. Through grants to advocacy groups, we seek to support systemic, compassionate, and just public policies.
